Municipal solid waste management program
At the end of the 19th century the industrial revolution lead to the rise of the world of consumers. In turn, the increase in population and urbanization was largely responsible for the increase in solid waste in our country. Each household generates waste day in and day out. Items that we no longer need or do not have any further use for, fall in the category of waste and we tend to throw them away. Under the municipal solid waste management program we try to prevent the creation of waste at the source and reduce the amount of waste thrown into the community dustbins and landfill sites. We try to implement the 3 R's of waste management in our program, i.e., reduce, reuse and recycle.
PEG has implemented decentralized solid waste management system in various corporate, industries and residential colonies. PEG is providing the following services to the society in the field of solid waste management:
¢ Door-to-door collection: PEG is providing
door-to-door services of waste collection to approximately
50000 households in Delhi, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and Noida. We
have formed a team of "Safai Mitra" earlier known
as ragpickers, who are also given training, uniforms and
most importantly an identity to this informal sector of the
society. 
¢ Transportation: We also have our own
arrangements for the transportation of the collected waste
from the site of collection to the designed site for
segregation and treatment.¢ Segregation: After putting lots of efforts in getting segregating waste at its source of generation, the results are not satisfactory. Therefore, we further segregate the collected waste into different components for efficient recycling of the waste components. PEG team is specially trained to do this job effectively and efficiently.

Recycling: PEG has tied up with various recycling
agencies for recycling of recyclable wastes such as paper,
plastic, glass, iron, cardboard sheets and metals. We also
recycle the organic waste through the technique of
vermicomposting. The final product or the vermicompost is
rich in nutrients and is used in agriculture and lawn
maintenance.
¢ Disposal: in decentralized solid waste
management system a very miniscule amount of waste, about
5-10% is needed to be disposed off in the landfill sites.
The remaining 90% is recycled.Health camps for "safai mitras"
To
protect the team of waste collectors and waste transporters
we regularly organize health checks and vaccination programs
for them to prevent from various diseases.Awareness and educational training program
For
any environmental project to be successful, the most
important role lies in creating awareness among the various
stakeholders or the beneficiaries about the system which is
being implemented. Therefore PEG educates the people through
various awareness tools such as street plays, power point
presentations, exhibitions or by organizing painting, essay
writing, slogan writing competitions among students of
different age groups.We also provide training programmes on solid waste management to the school children and other stakeholders such as members of RWAs, institutes, industries and corporate houses. In this program, we provide live demonstration of the vermicomposting technology to the trainees and train them for one complete life-cycle of the vermicomposting process. We explain them the process, starting from vermicompost bed formation to the harvesting of the vermicompost. Students also learn about the various requirements of vermicomposting process and about the earthworms' life-cycle.
Rain water harvesting system
In Delhi, due to growing population and excessive consuming nature, the ground water level is fast getting depleted. In some places in Delhi it has gone down beyond 200 feet which is an alarming situation. What is more deplorable is that every year millions and billions of rainwater gets wasted as run-off water. Thus, we have introduced the concept of rain water harvesting in various parts of delhi which include various industries, institutes and residential colonies. We construct rainwater harvesting units in these colonies or institutes and help them to recharge the ground water level.
Plantation Program
With the increase in urbanization and highly consumptive nature of human beings, vast tracts of forests are being cut at an alarming rate. This is leading to various kinds of environmental problems such as global warming and environmental disasters such as floods and landslides. Therefore we hold plantation drives every year in various parts of Delhi, involving school children and other members of the society.
